Thorvald's body consists of a simple ball-and-socket armature. His bones are made of steel rods that need to be sawed to specific measurements and screwed together with steel balls and tiny metal plates to create movable joints, much like the ones in the human body. To keep track of all the bones and joints, I had to make a little "body organizer" to sort his arms from his legs and make sure he came together all right!

Welcome to Thorvald!
Sometimes, the process of making a stop motion animated film is a bit like being locked in a deadly struggle with a fearsome sea serpent, only to look into its face and recognize yourself. This blog is for anyone who has battled a 12-inch tall monster of their own and discovered a worthy adversary and a beautiful friendship.

Wow you made the armature yourself? Crafty! This seems like a much better way to go about it considering the fact that pre-made ball and socket armatures are pretty expensive. It sucks that the Kickstarter thing isn't working out. Are you just going to try it again when the time's up? If so, are you going to be including in your video some clips of your previous stuff? I really think people would donate if they could see that you're capable of producing high quality stop motion. Keep up the amazing work!
ReplyDeleteLooks to me like am Armateur kit from Animation Supplies in UK !
ReplyDeleteYou are absolutely right, it is a Standard Kit from animationsupplies.net (sharp eyes!). I did however need to alter their measurements to work with the proportions of my character, and saw the rods down to size - hence the need for a body organizer.
